More from the Republican governor's meeting in Miami. At the final dinner tonight, I spoke with one clued-in observer who suggested that there is the belief, among some in this group, that the party might recover more quickly than it is likely to. I know that we have heard a lot of talk about 1993 and 1994, when, after losing the White House in 1992, Republicans stormed back to win the House and Senate and a lot of governorships. What people don't talk about as much is a) how much help Republicans got from Bill Clinton's messing up so badly in his first two years in office, and b) how much leadership the GOP got from Newt Gingrich on Capitol Hill. Now, will Barack Obama screw up as much as Clinton? And who is today's Gingrich? Those are questions Republicans have to consider as they search for a recovery scenario.
